1. Editor's Musings

Hello!

Please check out the feature article this week. My friend was victimized by ATM fraud last week. The article offers some information that might save you from a similar occurrence.

2. Article: Protect Yourself From ATM Fraud

Last week, my friend was victimized by ATM fraud. While visiting family in another province, she discovered that her bank card would no longer work. To make a long story short, someone had fraudulently removed $2000 from her account. At that point, the bank somehow recognized that the card was bogus and closed the account.

A bank representative said that someone had copied the ATM card and had acquired the PIN number. Happily, the banking institution eventually replaced the missing $2,000, which Canadian banks are inclined to do.

I did a little research as to how we can protect ourselves from this sort of crime.

  1. The PIN is NOT embedded in the card, as some people believe it is. Crooks need both a copy of the card and the PIN.

  2. The most common method of getting the PIN is via a camera that is installed somewhere in the vicinity, or that the crooks operate manually, using a cell phone with a camera feature or a digital camera with a zoom lens. Always shield your hand as you are entering the PIN number so hidden cameras can't get a view.

  3. In another scam, the crooks rig the ATM machine to capture your card. When you can't get your card back, the "helpful crook" shows up offering advice. He or she tells you that your card will be ejected if you enter your PIN number while holding down some key combination. When this doesn't work, you walk away to report the problem. The crook has captured both your card and your PIN.

  4. Be cautious of store employees who want to reswipe your card claiming the transaction didn't go through. Crooks theaten or bribe employees into swiping your card on a second machine that makes a copy and records the PIN number. Always watch your card if the clerk takes it and be sure s/he does not swipe it through a second machine.

  5. Before using an ATM machine, check to make sure the money slot is clear and open. My bank allows access to the ATM machines at night when the bank is closed. Crooks taped the money slot shut with tape that resembled my bank's colours. When customers made a withdrawal, the money didn't come out but the technology recorded the withdrawal. When the customer walked away, believing the machine wasn't working, or intending to report the problem the next day, the crooks moved in, pulled off the tape and took the customer's money.

  6. Always remember to take your printed ATM receipt with you. Crooks loiter near ATM machines to collect abandoned receipts, which they can use in identify theft. The PIN isn't shown on your receipt, but they use the info in other ways.

How much protection your bank provides will vary depending on your country. I'm happy to say that most Canadian banks return stolen money to their customers. Their insurance only partially covers this. Believe it or not, they take a loss to return our money.

6. Joke of the Week: A Questionable Choice

A husband found himself in big trouble when he forgot his wedding anniversary.

His wife angrily told him, "Tomorrow there better be something for me in the driveway that goes from zero to 160 in five seconds flat."

The next morning, the wife found a small package in the driveway. She opened it and found a brand new bathroom scale.

Visiting hours for the husband at the hospital are limited due to the extent of the injuries.
