1. Editor's Musings

We’re officially in summer, here in the Northern Hemisphere. Let's hope everyone has an opportunity to schedule some fun in the sun for these balmy, lazy days. And, a happy upcoming Canada Day to those who celebrate it.

Today's article isn't really an article. Rather, it's a request for feedback from my subscribers. Can you comment on the following situation:

2. Working from Home: Like it or Hate it? by June Campbell

Yesterday, a TV newscast reported the results of a survey of work-at-home entrepreneurs and telecommuters. Seemingly, although many of these people originally thought working at home was a fine idea, in time, they felt lonely, depressed, isolated and non-productive. Many could not motivate themselves to get out of their pajamas all day.

This discontent has lead to a new phenomenon. Many work-at-homers are joining forces with others to rent office space. Please note, this shared office space is not for the purpose of entertaining clients in a businesslike environment. The latter is a practical approach that many of us have been doing for years.

Rather, the motivation is to get out of the house and be among other people on a regularly scheduled basis.

I couldn't believe what I was hearing. I have been working at home (alone) since 1996 and I wouldn't have it any other way. Every day, I thank whatever Supreme Being there is that I don't have to dress in business attire, fight traffic, pay transportation related expenses, deal with office politics, contribute to office collections, and make special arrangements when contracting with a tradesperson to do work in my home.

Granted, the Christmas staff party is a bit dreary, since only the cats and myself attend!

Other than that, I love the fact that I can set my own schedule. Many days I start working at 5:30 AM so I can finish in early afternoon and have the rest of the day free to pursue my personal interests. Other times, I might take a break in mid-day to go the gym for exercise, then resume work later in the afternoon.

I wear sweats in the winter and shorts in the summer. I have daily contact with other people via the Internet, telephone, and in person when I go out. I'm around to let the plumber in when he arrives. I book my dental and other appointments at any time that works for me. I eat healthy food prepared at home. I have no need for boring packed lunches or for consuming rich, costly restaurant meals throughout the working day.

I accomplish more in a day than I ever did when I went to an office. My time and energy aren't being sapped by dealing with squabbles over who didn't put their money in the coffee kitty this week.

Am I the only one who has found Nirvana?

Let's hear it folks. If you've ever worked from home, what are your experiences? Good, bad or indifferent, I'd like to know your views. Send email to campbelj@nightcats.com and put Comments About Working From Home in the subject line.

Sorry, I'm not putting a live email link on the web site.It would be fodder for spambots.

3. Recommended Product: *** 250 FREE Full-Color Business Cards from Vista Print ***

This is truly a cool offer. I urge you to check it out. Vista Prints offers 250 FREE business cards. They are top quality, full color cards that would retail for $89 US if you were purchasing them.

The only drawback is that you must choose from the range of styles that Vista Print offers. Naturally, you can add your business message and contact information as part of the free deal. Customization is available for a fee.

And, unlike many online services, Visa Print ships to 120 countries, and maintains web sites for international consumers. Chances are you'll be able to access a web site written in your native language and quoting shipping fees in your country's currency.

I can see several reasons to take advantage of this free offer.

  1. If you're just starting out in business, you can save yourself the initial expense of business cards.
  2. You can order personal business cards for those occasions when you prefer not to use your regular cards.
  3. Students and job hunters will make good use of these free cards.
  4. 4. If you're selling a craft or service as a sideline, you can get special cards made specifically for this purpose.
  5. When promoting an affiliate program offline, you can hand out special cards with your affiliate link.
  6. Slip a personalized card in your luggage labels when traveling.

6. Joke: A Historical Event

Two economists were flying home from a meeting. Since both had booked the cheapest seats, they were both occupying the center seat on opposite sides of the aisle.

Throughout the takeoff, flight and meal service the two carried on their discussion of the latest economic theories.

Finally, one of the passengers in an aisle seat offered to trade places so he could sleep without distraction.

It was the first time an economic discussion ever kept anyone awake.
